Blackout-Proof Hybrid Control for an Off-Grid Facility

ComAp partnered with Veolia Solar España, a specialist branch of Veolia Spain that has been providing solar PV installations and maintenance services for more than 15 years, to deliver an off-grid hybrid control system for Veolia’s customer at an off-grid horse riding facility. Veolia's customer recognised the need to integrate battery energy storage with their existing PV and gen-set infrastructure to ensure greater energy resilience, prevent blackouts, and reduce fuel costs and emissions.

Previous attempts to integrate a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the customer's site using a third-party energy management system (EMS) were unsuccessful, as the EMS failed to synchronise all of the site’s energy sources. This left the site vulnerable to blackouts.

ComAp had previously assisted with the site’s gen-set integration, which was operating on ComAp’s InteliLite 4 AMF 9 controller. However, after recommending an upgrade to the InteliGen 500 G2 controller, the EMS provider had turned down the suggestion, resulting in a string of failures and difficulties. To address this, Veolia approached ComAp directly for a fully integrated and robust hybrid control solution.

In collaboration with Veolia Solar España, ComAp provided a new control solution featuring the InteliNeo 5500 microgrid controller to integrate and manage the site’s traditional Hyundai 32 kVA gen-set, 110 kWp Huawei PV system (100 KTL-M2), and 100 kWh Huawei LUNA 2000 BESS. The new system also includes the InteliGen 500 G2, ComAp’s advanced paralleling controller for complex diesel gen-set applications.

As a result of ComAp’s new control solution, Veolia Solar was able to deliver a hybrid system that enables the seamless integration and smooth operation of the site’s PV, BESS, and gen-set. This new system provides a stable and resilient source of off-grid power while improving the overall efficiency of all power sources, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and preventing the risk of blackouts. Veolia has reported that ComAp’s control solution is 30% more cost-effective than the site’s previous system.
