Flexible Hybrid Control for a Rental-Ready BESS Platform

ComAp collaborated with Energy Solutions to develop a flexible, rental-ready Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to help hire companies across the UK reduce emissions and noise while remaining compatible with a wide range of generator set brands. The project resulted in a UK-designed and packaged BESS platform that is now in series production, enabling greener and more adaptable power solutions across marine, vehicle, and off-grid rental applications.

Energy Solutions specialises in the design, build, and supply of fully integrated hybrid power, monitoring, and control systems, providing customers with complete solutions tailored to demanding environments. As rental markets increasingly look to decarbonise, the company identified a clear need for BESS units that could be easily deployed, operated, and integrated alongside existing generator fleets.

The project was driven by the requirement to offer rental-ready BESS units that reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and noise, while avoiding dependency on a single gen-set manufacturer or control platform. For hire companies managing mixed fleets, this level of flexibility is essential to maintaining operational freedom and maximising asset utilisation.

To address this challenge, ComAp worked closely with the Energy Solutions technical team, providing design consultation alongside programming and application support. This collaborative approach ensured the solution could accommodate multiple use cases while remaining straightforward to deploy in rental environments.

The system is built around the InteliNeo 5500 controller and InteliVision 10Touch display, delivering advanced hybrid microgrid control with intuitive visualisation. A key element of the solution is universal gen-set integration, including compatibility with third-party gen-set controllers, allowing the BESS to operate seamlessly with different generator brands.

As a result, Energy Solutions successfully developed a rental BESS product designed and built in the UK. Following initial production of three units for testing, trials, and compliance, the solution has progressed into series production, enabling hire companies to lower emissions and noise while simplifying operations and supporting sustainability goals.
